Delta has announced a new domestic route from Boston to Memphis. Beginning October 4, 2020, the airline will provide daily non-stop service between the airports on an Embraer 175 with 76 seats. Boston was Memphis's top unserved destination. This route was operated by Delta until January 2014, when Delta closed its hub in Memphis. Good luck to Delta on its new route! Unfortunately, not all routes turn out to be successful, some are even canceled before they launch. This is the case with LEVEL Airlines planned route to Paris-Orly from Boston. The airline was planning to launch service between the two airports as of March 31, 2020, however, these plans have been scrapped. Considering the massive amount of service between Boston and Paris, I am not surprised that LEVEL found it difficult to sell tickets between the city pair. Frontier has announced a new route from Boston Logan Airport to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As of May 1, 2020, the airline plans to begin daily service between the two cities on an Airbus A319. This will become the airline's fifth destination from Boston Logan Airport. Frontier will become the fourth airline to serve the route, in addition to American, Delta, and JetBlue. JetBlue has announced some changes to its route network from Boston. Beginning June 13, 2020, the airline will operate seasonal flights to Bozeman, Montana from Boston, twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, on an Airbus A320-200. This airport is a great starting point for travelers, interested in visiting Yellowstone National Park. Additionally, this is a new state for Boston, as the airport has not had service to the state previously. Unfortunately, however, with the changes, came the announcement that the airline is terminating two destinations from Boston. As of April 29, 2020, the airline will terminate its service to Oakland, California. American Airlines has announced three new routes from Boston Logan Airport. The airline has announced routes from Boston to Wilmington, North Carolina (a new destination Boston Logan); Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; and Indianapolis, Indiana. Beginning May 7, 2020, the airline will operate from Boston to Raleigh-Durham five times daily. On this route, the airline will be competing against Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue and Spirit Airlines. Additionally, as of May 7, 2020, the airline will fly between Boston and Indianapolis two times daily. Finally, as of May 9, 2020, the airline will be operating one time weekly flights on Saturdays to Wilmington, North Carolina. Allegiant Air has announced its plans to start service to Boston with four new destinations for Boston. Allegiant is a low-cost carrier, that mostly offered service from fairly small cities to leisure destinations, however, as of recently, the airline has been expanding into larger and larger airports. The airline plans to start seasonal service to Grand Rapids, Michigan on May 7, 2020; Knoxville, Tennessee on May 8, 2020; Asheville, North Carolina on May 8, 2020; and Destin/Fort Walton Beach, Florida on May 14, 2020. These are all new destinations for Boston, that are not served by another airline currently. Air Canada and WestJet have announced flights to Boston from Calgary. Air Canada announced that they intend to operate the seasonal route from Calgary on an Airbus A319-100 beginning June 22, 2020, to September 6, 2020. The route will depart Calgary at 16:15 and will arrive in Boston at 22:46, while the return flight will depart Boston at 06:30 and will arrive in Calgary at 09:32. This announcement was followed up days later by WestJet's announcement of the seasonal route from Calgary to be operated daily on a Boeing 737-700, beginning May 14, 2020, and terminating October 12, 2020. The flight is scheduled to depart Calgary at 09:45 and arrive in Boston at 16:15, while the return flight will depart Boston at 17:00 and will arrive in Calgary at 20:15. I have long thought that a Boston to Calgary route was necessary for Boston, however, we are going from no flights to two daily flights. American's growth spurt in Boston is continuing with the announcement of service to Austin. The airline will add 11 weekly flights to Austin from Boston on a Boeing 737-800 as of April 7th, 2020. Frontier Airlines has announced its fifth destination from Boston. The airline will start service to San Juan, Puerto Rico, as of April 23, 2020. Flights will be operated daily by an Airbus A321. The flight will depart Boston at 12:23 and will arrive in San Juan at 16:25, while the return flight will depart San Juan at 01:54 and will arrive in Boston at 06:06. Frontier will join Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Airways in the operation of this flight. Prices for flights to San Juan should have decreased noticeably from Boston in the last year, as we have gone from only direct flights by JetBlue, to the entrance of two low-cost carriers in that time frame. TAP Air Portugal has announced a new route from Boston Logan Airport. The airline intends to offer service to Ponta Delgada, Azores Islands, Portugal from Boston. Beginning June 4th, 2020, the route will be operated five times weekly on an Airbus A321neoLR during the summer season and three times weekly throughout the winter season. The flight will depart Ponta Delgada at 16:15 and arrive in Boston at 17:20, while the return flight will depart Boston at 22:30 and will arrive in Ponta Delgada at 07:20 the next day. Currently, this route is served by Azores Airlines, I am interested to see whether both airlines will be able to operate this route profitably, or will we see an airline back down. Domestic service on widebody airplanes is becoming increasingly rare in the United States, however, due to American Airlines' future route to London-Heathrow, the airline will add a flight from Miami to Boston on a widebody Boeing 777-200ER. As of March 30, 2020, one of the seven daily flights to Miami on American on a Boeing 777. Flights AA029 and AA1170 will be operated by the aircraft.  Flight  AA029 will depart Boston at 15:25 and arrive in Miami at 18:55. Scandinavian Airlines, also known as SAS, has announced some changes to its flight to Boston from Copenhagen. As of September 26, 2020, the airline will increase frequency on its flights to Boston, from 4 weekly to 6 weekly, switching from the Airbus A330-300 to the Airbus A321neo LR. Currently, the airline operates the route seasonally during the summer, however, with the switch they intend to return to operating the route year-round. Although this is a decrease in capacity from 262 seats to 157, I think that this change is great for the route. SAS's route to Boston began on a leased PrivatAir 737-700 which they operated with a premium heavy configuration. However, after terminating the lease they switched to a much larger Airbus A330-300 with lower frequency. Recently, Cabo Verde Airlines have made some changes in the schedule of their Boston flight. The airline was planning to move its Boston flight from Praia to Sal, however, the newly published schedule shows that they intend to offer service to both destinations. The airline will operate a Boeing 757-200 departing Sal at 10:00 on Monday and will arrive in Boston at 14:10, while the return flight will depart Boston at 08:30 Tuesday and will arrive in Sal at 20:00 the same day. The flight to Praia will also be operated by a Boeing 757-200 that will depart Praia at 03:00 on Saturday and will arrive in Boston at 07:10 while the return flight will depart Boston at 15:40 on Tuesday and arrive in Praia at 03:10 the next day. I am glad that Boston will have routes to both Praia and Sal, however, I am simply unable to wrap my head around the timings. In a number of new route announcements by Minnesota based Sun Country Airlines, the airline has announced a new service to Boston Logan Airport. Beginning May 7, 2020, the airline will fly between Madison, Wisconsin, and Boston, Massachusetts twice a week on Sundays and Thursdays. The airline will utilize a Boeing 737 on the route. This is a new destination for Boston and will become Sun Country Airlines' second destination from Boston, in addition to Minneapolis. Although I am glad to see a new destination served from Boston, I do wonder if Sun Country will be the best airline for the route. Due to the fact that Sun Country does not possess regional aircraft, they are using a large Boeing 737 on the route, therefore they are only flying the route twice weekly. Alternatively, if the route was operated by a regional aircraft of Delta Air Lines or JetBlue Airways they could likely fly the route at a higher frequency. Austrian Airlines has announced its plan to begin service to Boston in the summer of 2020. Beginning March 29, 2020, Austrian will fly four weekly flights on its Boeing 767-300ER to Boston from Vienna. The frequency of the flight will increase to six weekly as of April 22, 2020, on all days except Mondays. The flight will depart Boston Logan Airport at 18:15 and arrive in Vienna at 08:25 the next day. The return flight will depart Vienna at 13:25 and arrive in Boston at 16:30. American is continuing its announcements of Boston flights. American Airlines has announced its plan to begin flights to Key West, Florida. Beginning February 15, 2020, American Airlines will fly the route once weekly on Saturdays on an Embraer E175. This is a new destination for Boston. Good luck to American on its new service! Norwegian Airlines has announced some changes for its 2020 summer schedule. In those changes, Boston will see an additional weekly frequency on its flight to Paris. Beginning May 9, 2020, the route will increase from 4 to 5 weekly flights. There has been a small announcement from KLM regarding its Boston service. The airline plans to add an additional weekly service to its Amsterdam route in the Spring of 2020. Just over half a year after launching service to Boston, Korean Air has announced its intention to increase service between Boston and Seoul. As of May 4, 2020, the airline will increase flights from 5 weekly to daily. Additionally, the flights will be now performed by the larger Boeing 777-300ER as opposed to the current Boeing 787-9. Although, Boston Logan Airport has certainly seen a lot of success in the last few years in terms of new routes, unfortunately, not all routes work out long term and some will end up getting cut. JetBlue Airways has announced that they are terminating their route to Mexico City. JetBlue is completely closing its Mexico City base and terminating flights all of their flights there as of January 9, 2020. This is just over a year after JetBlue began flying to Mexico City from Boston, and  AeroMexico terminated its Boston route.  Unfortunately, airlines have just been unable to make the market work from Boston.
