Boston Aviation

Unfortunately, not all routes turn out to be successful, some are even canceled before they launch. This is the case with LEVEL Airlines planned route to Paris-Orly from Boston. The airline was planning to launch service between the two airports as of March 31, 2020, however, these plans have been scrapped. Considering the massive amount of service between Boston and Paris, I am not surprised that LEVEL found it difficult to sell tickets between the city pair. JetBlue has announced some changes to its route network from Boston. Beginning June 13, 2020, the airline will operate seasonal flights to Bozeman, Montana from Boston, twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, on an Airbus A320-200. This airport is a great starting point for travelers, interested in visiting Yellowstone National Park. Additionally, this is a new state for Boston, as the airport has not had service to the state previously. Unfortunately, however, with the changes, came the announcement that the airline is terminating two destinations from Boston. As of April 29, 2020, the airline will terminate its service to Oakland, California. In addition, the airline has announced the plan to eliminate the once-weekly flight between Boston and Havana, Cuba. Unfortunately, the airline has been unable to make that route work. Although, Boston Logan Airport has certainly seen a lot of success in the last few years in terms of new routes, unfortunately, not all routes work out long term and some will end up getting cut. JetBlue Airways has announced that they are terminating their route to Mexico City. JetBlue is completely closing its Mexico City base and terminating flights all of their flights there as of January 9, 2020. This is just over a year after JetBlue began flying to Mexico City from Boston, and  AeroMexico terminated its Boston route.  Unfortunately, airlines have just been unable to make the market work from Boston. Avianca Holdings, the parent company of Avianca and Avianca El Salvador, is undergoing restructuring in order to curb losses as a company. Unfortunately, as part of the restructuring, they are terminating 11 medium haul routes. Therefore, as of May 1, 2019, Avianca will stop flying from Boston to Bogota, and as of June 1, 2019, Avianca El Salvador will stop flying from Boston to El Salvador. This is unfortunate because the routes are being terminated mostly due to financial issues of the airline and not a poor load factor. For fairly new routes, both had been doing fairly well, averaging between 80-90%. Hopefully, if Avianca solves their economic issues, they will eventually consider relaunching the routes.

United is terminating its route between Boston and Cleveland and Delta is beginning service from Boston to Cleveland. United Airlines will be terminating its 3 times daily service between the two cities as of March 7, 2019. Less than an hour after United's announcement, Delta announced they will be starting service from Boston to Cleveland 3 times daily beginning April 1, 2019. I would not be surprised to learn that Delta had no intention of starting the route yet, but seeing United leave the route, they decided to quickly add the route to not let JetBlue further strengthen its position on the route. Although recently Boston has seen a massive influx of new international flights, occasionally there are airlines for which service to Boston does not work out. Unfortunately Aeromexico is one such case and the airline has announced they are terminating their flight to Boston as of January 6, 2019, after the route was deemed unprofitable by the airline. The airline flies a Boeing 737 to Boston on a daily basis. This comes on the heels of JetBlue's entry into the market today. JetBlue launched daily flights from Boston to Mexico City and from the announcement of the flight I questioned whether or not the market was large enough for two airlines. Clearly, it isn't. I do wonder if Aeromexico could have fared better had the route been scheduled at a better time. It  leaves Boston past midnight and arrives in Mexico City at 04:00 AM, resulting in a very rough red-eye flight.
