Terminal E Expansion

For many years Massport has been pushing to expand Boston Logan's International Terminal. Terminal E was constructed in 1974 with 12 gates and was meant to accommodate 1.5 million passengers a year, but last year close to 6 million people passed through the same terminal, four times more than it was designed to handle. This has resulted in a very crowded terminal and long lines for security and customs and border protection. Although some upgrades were implemented to speed up security and customs to help in the short term, it is clear that Boston Logan must expand to cope with the increased traffic, to address concerns such as a lack of gates. Yesterday, more information was released about the expansion. In an article from the Boston Globe, it describes how Massport has selected AECOM and luis vidal+ architects to remodel Terminal E. Their futuristic design is "a wave-like roof in bright red and shaped to follow the path of the sun. North-facing skylights 'in the form of eyelashes' would allow light into the interior while protecting it from direct sun exposure while on the south side, the roof would step down along the façade and feature openings with views of downtown."(Boston Globe). Here is a rendering of the new Terminal E by AECOM.

This expansion plans to add seven additional gates to the current twelve, a new security checkpoint, airline clubs, a new baggage systems and a multistory great hall for passengers. This is all currently in the design phase, but Massport is estimating completion of the project by 2022, which in my opinion is very ambitious for a project in such an early stage. Additionally, the current international arrivals and customs hall might be renovated to let in more natural light. Terry Rookard, principal architect, and senior vice president with AECOM in Boston, stated, "This project will elevate Massport’s reputation for providing a world-class passenger experience to its international passengers". I think this is a great expansion for Terminal E, which is in dire need of an expansion, but I do believe that Massport has a completion date that is not realistic for such a large construction project. I really like the new design of the terminal and will post more pictures when they are released.
