Primera Announces Frankfurt

Primera Air has been on a roll with two new routes from Boston in the past two weeks. The airline is continuing their additions by adding another new destination from Boston- Frankfurt. Beginning July 17, 2019, the airline will inaugurate the route a Boeing 737 MAX 9 flying the route 4 times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The flight is scheduled to leave Frankfurt at 18:00 (local time) and land in Boston at 20:35 (local time). The return flight is scheduled to leave Boston at 22:05 (local time) and will land in Frankfurt at 11:20 +1 day (local time). This new route intrigues me because, put simply, this is not a market that I expected Primera Air to enter. Frankfurt is primarily a business destination and a connecting hub for Lufthansa. There aren't too many people who travel between Boston and Frankfurt as leisure travelers. I say this because low-cost carriers are usually targeting vacationers. I'm not really confident that Primera Air will be successful with this new route, as they are going to be fighting Lufthansa for passengers. The latter is a much more developed company and business travelers are more likely to chose Lufthansa, a full-service carrier, than Primera Air. Additionally, Lufthansa can offer connection opportunities for travelers through Frankfurt, while Primera Air will be entirely reliant on origin to destination passengers. I am also interested if this will bring down prices on the route, similarly to what happened in London upon the entrance of Norwegian Air, because Lufthansa will have to compete against a low-cost carrier, something it hasn't had to previously. Finally, Primera Air's recent expansion in Boston has been nothing short of remarkable, next summer they will operate flights to Paris (3 weekly), London (4 weekly), Brussels (4 weekly), Berlin (4 weekly), and Frankfurt (4 weekly), from Boston, this makes them the carrier with the most transatlantic destinations from Boston with 19 weekly flights. I wish Primera Air the best of luck with their new route, but it will definitely be a very difficult battle for them.

    1. There is no information on them yet, as they will begin next summer. Currently, the only routes the airline flies from Boston are to Paris and London.
