American adds Austin

American's growth spurt in Boston is continuing with the announcement of service to Austin. The airline will add 11 weekly flights to Austin from Boston on a Boeing 737-800 as of April 7th, 2020. The airline will join JetBlue, Delta, and Southwest in operating the route. Good luck to the airline on its new route! Source:  www.routesonline.com

Frontier announces San Juan

Frontier Airlines has announced its fifth destination from Boston. The airline will start service to San Juan, Puerto Rico, as of April 23, 2020. Flights will be operated daily by an Airbus A321. The flight will depart Boston at 12:23 and will arrive in San Juan at 16:25, while the return flight will depart San Juan at 01:54 and will arrive in Boston at 06:06. Frontier will join Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Airways in the operation of this flight. Prices for flights to San Juan should have decreased noticeably from Boston in the last year, as we have gone from only direct flights by JetBlue, to the entrance of two low-cost carriers in that time frame. Good luck to Frontier with its new route! Source:  www.routesonline.com

TAP Air Portugal adding service to the Azores

TAP Air Portugal has announced a new route from Boston Logan Airport. The airline intends to offer service to Ponta Delgada, Azores Islands, Portugal from Boston. Beginning June 4th, 2020, the route will be operated five times weekly on an Airbus A321neoLR during the summer season and three times weekly throughout the winter season. The flight will depart Ponta Delgada at 16:15 and arrive in Boston at 17:20, while the return flight will depart Boston at 22:30 and will arrive in Ponta Delgada at 07:20 the next day. Currently, this route is served by Azores Airlines, I am interested to see whether both airlines will be able to operate this route profitably, or will we see an airline back down. American Adding 777 service to Miami

Domestic service on widebody airplanes is becoming increasingly rare in the United States, however, due to American Airlines' future route to London-Heathrow, the airline will add a flight from Miami to Boston on a widebody Boeing 777-200ER. As of March 30, 2020, one of the seven daily flights to Miami on American on a Boeing 777. Flights AA029 and AA1170 will be operated by the aircraft.  Flight  AA029 will depart Boston at 15:25 and arrive in Miami at 18:55. SAS A321LR to Operate Boston Route

Scandinavian Airlines, also known as SAS, has announced some changes to its flight to Boston from Copenhagen. As of September 26, 2020, the airline will increase frequency on its flights to Boston, from 4 weekly to 6 weekly, switching from the Airbus A330-300 to the Airbus A321neo LR. Currently, the airline operates the route seasonally during the summer, however, with the switch they intend to return to operating the route year-round. Although this is a decrease in capacity from 262 seats to 157, I think that this change is great for the route. SAS's route to Boston began on a leased PrivatAir 737-700 which they operated with a premium heavy configuration. However, after terminating the lease they switched to a much larger Airbus A330-300 with lower frequency. This was very bad for the route, for some time the route had some terrible load factors, especially during the winter season, however, they struggled to fill the plane during the summer too. I think that the A321neo LR is th

Changes in Cabo Verde Airlines' Boston Service

Recently, Cabo Verde Airlines have made some changes in the schedule of their Boston flight. The airline was planning to move its Boston flight from Praia to Sal, however, the newly published schedule shows that they intend to offer service to both destinations. The airline will operate a Boeing 757-200 departing Sal at 10:00 on Monday and will arrive in Boston at 14:10, while the return flight will depart Boston at 08:30 Tuesday and will arrive in Sal at 20:00 the same day. The flight to Praia will also be operated by a Boeing 757-200 that will depart Praia at 03:00 on Saturday and will arrive in Boston at 07:10 while the return flight will depart Boston at 15:40 on Tuesday and arrive in Praia at 03:10 the next day. I am glad that Boston will have routes to both Praia and Sal, however, I am simply unable to wrap my head around the timings. The 03:00 departures and arrivals into Praia are brutal, I can imagine some people will decide to avoid taking the direct route in order to skip th

Sun Country adds Madison

In a number of new route announcements by Minnesota based Sun Country Airlines, the airline has announced a new service to Boston Logan Airport. Beginning May 7, 2020, the airline will fly between Madison, Wisconsin, and Boston, Massachusetts twice a week on Sundays and Thursdays. The airline will utilize a Boeing 737 on the route. This is a new destination for Boston and will become Sun Country Airlines' second destination from Boston, in addition to Minneapolis. Although I am glad to see a new destination served from Boston, I do wonder if Sun Country will be the best airline for the route. Due to the fact that Sun Country does not possess regional aircraft, they are using a large Boeing 737 on the route, therefore they are only flying the route twice weekly. Alternatively, if the route was operated by a regional aircraft of Delta Air Lines or JetBlue Airways they could likely fly the route at a higher frequency. Good luck to Sun Country Airlines on its new Boston route! Source:

Austrian Airlines announces Boston

Austrian Airlines has announced its plan to begin service to Boston in the summer of 2020. Beginning March 29, 2020, Austrian will fly four weekly flights on its Boeing 767-300ER to Boston from Vienna. The frequency of the flight will increase to six weekly as of April 22, 2020, on all days except Mondays. The flight will depart Boston Logan Airport at 18:15 and arrive in Vienna at 08:25 the next day. The return flight will depart Vienna at 13:25 and arrive in Boston at 16:30. Boston's transatlantic growth just is not stopping! Good luck to Austrian on their new route! Source:  www.routesonline.com

Norwegian Summer 2020 Schedule Changes

Norwegian Airlines has announced some changes for its 2020 summer schedule. In those changes, Boston will see an additional weekly frequency on its flight to Paris. Beginning May 9, 2020, the route will increase from 4 to 5 weekly flights. Unfortunately, it seems as if the route to Madrid will not return next summer as it has not been listed on the schedule of next summer. Source:  www.routesonline.com

As of May 4, 2020, the airline will increase flights from 5 weekly to daily. Additionally, the flights will be now performed by the larger Boeing 777-300ER as opposed to the current Boeing 787-9. It is great to see that the market is working out well for the airline and that it has found success with the route. Source:  www.routesonline.com

JetBlue ending Mexico City Flights

Although, Boston Logan Airport has certainly seen a lot of success in the last few years in terms of new routes, unfortunately, not all routes work out long term and some will end up getting cut. JetBlue Airways has announced that they are terminating their route to Mexico City. JetBlue is completely closing its Mexico City base and terminating flights all of their flights there as of January 9, 2020. This is just over a year after JetBlue began flying to Mexico City from Boston, and  AeroMexico terminated its Boston route.  Unfortunately, airlines have just been unable to make the market work from Boston. Level adds flights to Paris-Orly

LEVEL, the airline, has announced a new route from Boston Logan Airport. The airline plans to introduce a 3 weekly service to Paris-Orly Airport. The flights will begin March 31, 2020, and will be flown on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays on an Airbus A330-200. The flights will depart Boston at 23:00 and will arrive in Paris at 12:05 the next day. The return flight will depart Paris at 19:15 and will arrive in Boston at 21:00. For those unfamiliar with LEVEL, LEVEL is a low-cost long-haul airline owned by the IAG, parent company of British Airlines, Iberia, Aer Lingus and more,  currently, the airline flies from Boston to Barcelona, therefore, it will be their second route from Boston. Additionally, this means that Boston will have service to both airports in Paris. Good luck to LEVEL on its new route! Source:  www.routesonline.com

American Airlines adds London Route

Just as it started to seem as if American Airlines was giving up on its routes out of Boston, while allowing Delta to grow, American Airlines has announced its own transatlantic route from Boston, just over 2 years since the airline canceled its  last transatlantic flight from Boston.  Beginning March 28, 2020, American Airlines will begin to fly daily from Boston to London-Heathrow on a Boeing 777-200ER. The flight will depart Boston at 19:30 and arrive in London-Heathrow at 07:30. The return flight will depart London at 09:35 and arrive in Boston at 12:35. The addition of this flight means that Boston will have 10 flights per day to London as of next summer, and this is all before JetBlue adds its planned route to Boston! British Airways will have 4 flights per day to London-Heathrow, American Airlines will have 1 flight per day to London Heathrow, Virgin Atlantic will have 2 flights per day to London-Heathrow, Delta will have 1 flight to London-Heathrow as well as 1 flight to Londo

Delta Air Lines is continuing its growth out of its Boston Logan Airport hub. Delta announced a seasonal route on an Airbus A330-300 to Rome-Fiumicino beginning May 21, 2020. The route will be flown daily, in addition to flights by Alitalia and Norwegian. Additionally, the airline has announced its plan for another daily flight to Paris-Charles de Gaulle on a Boeing 767-300ER during the summer season. Congratulations to Delta on continuing their growth at Boston! Source:  www.routesonline.com

American Airlines adding service to Grand Cayman and Nassau

American Airlines has announced 2 new seasonal services from Boston Logan Airport. The airline intends on launching a once-weekly service on Saturdays from Boston to Grand Cayman and Nassau, Bahamas. Both of these routes will launch January 11, 2020, and will be operated on Boeing 737-800. Interestingly, both of these routes were previously operated by US Airways until 2010, which was later acquired by American Airlines. Good luck to American Airways on their new routes! Cape Air adds service to Portland

A small addition, however, notable. Cape Air has announced its intentions to launch service from Boston to Portland, Maine. The airline plans to offer 4 daily flights on its 9-seat Cessna 402 aircraft. Due to Cape Air's codeshare with JetBlue Airways, this will allow for additional connection opportunities through Boston Logan to the world. Source:  www.routesonline.com

Delta Adds New Routes to United Kingdom

Delta Air Lines has announced multiple new routes from Boston recently. The airline intends on offering service to London-Gatwick Airport on a daily basis on its Boeing 757-200 beginning May 21, 2020. The flight will depart Boston Logan at 21:00 and will arrive in London at 08:45 the next day. The return flight will depart London at 10:30 and arrive in Boston at 13:20. In addition, Delta will offer seasonal service to Manchester, United Kingdom, on its Boeing 757-200 beginning May 21, 2020. The flight will depart Boston at 22:00 and arrive in Manchester at 09:30. The return flight will depart Manchester at 11:30 and arrive in Boston at 14:00. However, this route will replace the existing two times weekly flight of Virgin Atlantic from Manchester on the Airbus A330-200. For Delta this will represent its 8th trans-Atlantic destination from Boston, not counting joint ventures and codeshares. Congratulations to Delta on its continued growth at Boston! Beginning November 15, 2019, the airline will fly an Airbus A320, 4 times weekly between the two airports. As of December 6, 2019, the airline will reduce the route to 3 times weekly. Lufthansa will become the third airline to utilize the Airbus A380 on routes to Boston, with the other two being British Airways and Emirates. Great news for Boston Logan Airport! Virgin Atlantic Emergency Landing

Last night, Thursday, July 4, a Virgin Atlantic flight made an emergency landing at Boston Logan due to a fire on board during a New York to London flight. The initial report blamed the small blaze on a power bank. Luckily, the fire was small, so the plane safely landed and was evacuated with no serious injuries. Source: www.bbc.com

Cape Air Sustainability and Electric Planes

Cape Air has been heavily investing in developing a more ecologically sustainable business, leading to the Environmental Protection Agency awarding the airline the 2011 Environmental Merit Award. The push for a smaller carbon footprint has included everything from the construction of a solar panel arrangement to energy efficiency improvements in the headquarters building.  Now, this push for further improvements has driven to a reported purchase of Alice aircraft, a new electric plane made by Eviation and unveiled at the Paris Air Show.         I am quite excited about this development. Although I still have questions about the charging infrastructure, I am excited to see this technological advancement. Given the shorter distances that Cape Air flies from Boston Logan, range likely will not be an issue. Hopefully these aircraft prove to be reliable and safe, paving the way for others, such as the upcoming hybrid Airbus plane.         Alice still needs to pass certification b

El Al will fly Boeing 787 to Boston

El Al Airlines, which flies three times weekly from Boston to Tel Aviv, has announced an aircraft change for the route. The airline currently operates a Boeing 777-200ER on the route, however, as of December 15, 2019, the airline will use the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner on the route instead. This represents a decrease in capacity between the two cities, as the Boeing 777-200ER has 279 seats, as opposed to the Boeing 787-8's 238 seats. Source:  www.routesonline.com

Avianca Terminating Boston Routes

Avianca Holdings, the parent company of Avianca and Avianca El Salvador, is undergoing restructuring in order to curb losses as a company. Unfortunately, as part of the restructuring, they are terminating 11 medium haul routes. Therefore, as of May 1, 2019, Avianca will stop flying from Boston to Bogota, and as of June 1, 2019, Avianca El Salvador will stop flying from Boston to El Salvador. This is unfortunate because the routes are being terminated mostly due to financial issues of the airline and not a poor load factor. For fairly new routes, both had been doing fairly well, averaging between 80-90%. Hopefully, if Avianca solves their economic issues, they will eventually consider relaunching the routes.

Today In Boston Logan

Today, March 31, 2019, was certainly an eventful day at Boston Logan. As the winter airline schedule flipped to the summer schedule, Boston saw a plethora of new routes. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines launched their 3x weekly flight from Amsterdam. This flight is in addition to Delta's return to its summer schedule which includes 2x daily flights from Amsterdam as opposed to the single daily flight from Amsterdam during the winter. Additionally, Delta Air Lines has resumed its daily service to Dublin from Boston, the route will fly on a Boeing 757-200 until May 23, 2019, when the flight will switch to a Boeing 767-300ER. Also, SAS has resumed its seasonal service to Boston. Norwegian Airlines launched flights to Boston to Rome-Fiumicino Airport. This service is in addition to its service from London, Paris, and their upcoming flights to Madrid. Finally, Virgin Atlantic has added its second daily service to Boston from London-Heathrow Airport. The flight has a late arrival from Boston an

2018 Passenger Count

Massport has released statistics for 2018, which proved to be a record year for Boston in many ways. In 2018 Logan Airport had 40,941,925 passengers compared to 38,412,419 passengers in 2017. This represents a 6.6% increase in passengers from 2017. It is amazing to think that Boston eclipsed 40 million passengers considering the airport hit 30 million passengers in 2013. Of the 40.9 million passengers, 7,583,887 passengers were on international flights compared to 7,199,595 passengers in 2017. This represents a 5.3% growth in international passengers in a year. This also means that international passengers represented 18.5% of travelers from Boston Logan Airport. The growth that Boston has achieved is truly incredible, hopefully there is more to come!

It is official! Royal Air Maroc will add service to Boston. Beginning June 22, 2019, Royal Air Maroc, Morocco's flag carrier airline, will fly three times weekly on a Boeing 787-8. The flight will operate on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays until October 1, 2019, when they will begin flying the route Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. This is Boston's second non-stop flight to Africa, however, the TACV flight to Praia, Cape Verde is only once weekly and offers very limited connection opportunities. Due to Royal Air Maroc's extensive destinations map in Africa, this will be one of the best ways to find connections to other parts of the continent. Congratulations and good luck to Royal Air Maroc on their new route to Boston! Source:  www.routesonline

Emirates adding A380 service to Boston

Emirates has announced that they are adding A380 service to Boston. Beginning June 1, 2019, the carrier will replace the Boeing 777-300ER with an Airbus A380-800 to deal with the increased amount of travelers during the summer months. The airline will revert back to the Boeing 777-300ER after September 30, 2019. This is a HUGE increase in capacity as there will be 135 more seats than on the Boeing 777-300ER. This is also a great bonus for passengers, as the Emirates A380 is known for its lavish onboard showers and bars. It's nice to hear that Boston will have its second scheduled A380 service.
