Korean Air Announces Boston Route

The day has finally come!!! Korean Air has announced that it will fly from Seoul-Incheon to Boston Logan Airport beginning April 12, 2019. The flight will depart Seoul 09:30 AM and arrive in Boston at 10:30 AM. The return flight will depart Boston at 01:30 PM and will arrive in Seoul at 04:50 PM the following day. The route will operate 5 times a week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday on a Boeing 787-9 with 269 seats. Now, time for a brief history lesson about the flight. Korean Air was actually the first Asian airline to operate flights to Boston. It started the route on a Boeing 747 and flew a route from Seoul to Boston to Washington DC to Seoul. The plane was a large plane with 4 engines and the triangle routing was inefficient, and as a result, soon after its launch, Korean Air dropped it in February 2001 and Boston was left with no flights to Asia. More than a decade passed with no Asian flights, but finally in 2012 Japan Airlines announced service to Tokyo from Boston. This was soon followed with Hainan introducing flights to Beijing and Shanghai, and Cathay Pacific introducing their route to Hong Kong, along with Qatar Airways, Emirates and El Al, but Boston still didn't have service to Seoul. Seoul was the largest unserved international market from Boston and from Seoul, and with Korean Air's recently announced joint venture with Delta Air Lines, it was only a matter of time until the route would come to fruition. This is a huge win for Boston Logan Airport and Delta Air Lines, which is trying to increase its presence in Boston. It will allow travelers to seamlessly connect through Seoul-Incheon Airport's new Terminal 2, only for the use of SkyTeam Airlines, considered among the best terminals in the world. As for my expectations for this flight, I expect it to do VERY well. I would not be surprised to see the airline increase the route to fly daily and possibly on a bigger aircraft in no time given the large quantities of travelers between the two cities. In addition, this will be SkyTeam Alliance's first route from Boston to Asia, a market previously only served by OneWorld and unaffiliated airlines.
